A heartwarming tale of hope for young and old alike

Reflecting on the beauty of her world, a young girl finds it hard to imagine the time the elders speak of – when many were driven by fear and self-interest, when the earth was sick from the ways of the people, and needed to fight back to reclaim its balance.  She marvels at her world and the bravery and determination it must have taken to make it possible.

In essence, A World Worth Imagining is about opening our minds and hearts to the wonder of what our future might hold.

A WORLD WORTH IMAGINING

The Inspiration

A World Worth Imagining was inspired by a wonderful group of young people I have taught for many years.  One Earth Day morning standing by our pond, I invited the children to close their eyes and imagine what it might look like in one hundred years.  One of the girls refused, believing that the world would have been destroyed by then.

Our young people understand the crisis facing the planet and its people, that message is coming to them loud and clear.  They hear it, feel it, and they understand the responsibility that comes with it.  What they (all of us really), also need to hear are the voices of visionaries and dreamers, those who can see the possibilities of a new and brighter future. The ones that say, “but if we get it al right, imagine what’s possible”! A World Worth Imagining aspires to be one of those voices-- one that we hear inside, when everything seems too big and too impossible, “but what if .?” When I first wrote A World Worth Imagining, it was to tell a story of hope for our young people. Now, I see more how the story is also written for all of us who care for them.--to give us hope as we imagine the world our children are going to inherit

So, on that morning sitting by the pond, I committed to creating a different kind of story for our children, one with a different kind of message -- hope.

To build a global community that is based on respect and compassion, I believe we must start by creating cultures in our smaller communities that share those same values and truths. As the school year starts, this is the time that we as educators can begin (or continue), to help guide our students in creating classroom communities that embody our visions for a world worth imagining.

I invite you this Earth Day, to help inspire hope in our kids!  “A World Worth Imagining” can help you do that.  It can simply be a story-- a vision, that you can share; or a jumping off point for discussions, activities and idea sharing for your homeschool, classrooms, family and other groups.
